Introduction to the Summer School
We believe that Latvian craftsmen knowledge in timber as a construction material has deep roots into our history dated back to ancient times and is inherited from our ancestors.
Thanks to their knowledge and skills, wooden buildings created centuries ago still delight the city’s residents and visitors. That is why we have mixed feelings, on the one hand, we are grateful for the heritage left by our forefathers as we are aware of its value and on the other hand – we pay great attention to preserving the wealth of this nation for generations to come.
The summer school «Smart Solutions for Architects: Wooden Architecture example» links Latvian craftsmen’s know-how and RTU professors’ attainment in the field of architecture, wooden architecture, preservation, restoration, and modern technologies.
A combination of those two worlds will result in an intensive two-week summer school where participants are able to gain new knowledge regarding wood as a construction material, restoration approaches, and access new-age technology solutions for the preservation of cultural and historical heritage.
The course’s aim is to increase participants’ knowledge about the use and properties of wood as a material, emphasizing its advantages, gain an understanding of the restoration process, identify and apply the usage of smart technologies in architecture, and also increase awareness of the wooden architecture of Latvia.

- History of Wooden Architecture in Riga;
- Riga – Its Historical Value in Wooden Architecture;
- Wood Development Process – From Seed to House;
- Tips and Tricks in Restoration;
- 3D Modelling and Scanning in Architecture;
- Timber – Its Value as Building and Construction Material.

Participants must be enrolled in a degree related to design, architecture, material science and civil engineering.
