Introduction to the Summer School
We are living in a unique era where we can experience the rapid and unprecedented development of unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) technology. Of course, we have to admit that the concept of drones is by no means an invention of this century, as the idea of reducing human involvement in performing various dangerous and complex tasks was already observed in the mid-nineteenth century.
If at first scientists could only rely on helium balloons, wind direction and luck, then with the development of signal transmission technologies, each new year brought new achievements in the respective industry.
Drones are both a toy and an assistant in photography and monitoring, support in topography surveying, as well as a delivery tool. Just as drones differ in the specifics of their application, they also tend to vary in their design and capabilities: large and small, quiet and not so discreet, fast and slow, low-flying and cloud-skimming.
After all, whatever the parameters and tasks of the drone, it is controlled by a person by using Radio Frequency spectrum such as 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands, and a GPS receiver is required for successful interaction.
The summer school “IoT of Drones: GPS-Less Navigation” seeks to find out whether drones would be able to perform assigned tasks autonomously and without the use of GPS. Along with the matters of navigation, the summer school will focus on issues related to computer vision, the symbiosis of artificial intelligence, and new-generation transmission systems aimed at improving the level of autonomy of drones.

1200 EUR (including lectures 36 hours, practical classes 62 hours, course materials, accommodation)
Learning Outcomes
RTU certificate, 9 ECTS and a real problem-solving and finding-solutions experience in the field of IoT
Scholarships
Student from the following countries can obtain Latvian government scholarships* for the summer school. Scholarship covers accommodation, catering, lectures, workshops, excursions, field trips and cultural activities except travel, visa and insurance costs
